Awareness Talk on HPV Vaccination

Strengthening Women’s Health: Insights from Dr. Bency on HPV Vaccination

Dr. Bency, Scientist F at ICMR-ROHC Southern, recently conducted an insightful session on the critical role of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in preventing cervical cancer. With India accounting for approximately 25% of global cervical cancer deaths and 20% of global cases, the urgency for preventive action has never been higher. During the talk, Dr. Bency emphasized that about 80-85% of all cervical cancers are caused by HPV infections, making the vaccine a powerful tool for long-lasting protection and herd immunity within the community.

The vaccine is most effective when administered to girls between the ages of 9 and 14, as a younger age typically yields a stronger immune response before any exposure to the virus occurs. This safe and tested vaccine, which protects against high-risk HPV types, is now available as a single-dose injection at all government health facilities, including Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, Primary Health Centres, and District Hospitals.

Parents are reminded that while the vaccination is voluntary and requires parental consent, it is a vital step in protecting their daughters before cancer can ever begin. For a safe experience, ensure the child does not take the vaccine on an empty stomach and that any known allergies are disclosed to the health facility staff beforehand. By prioritizing this early intervention, we can significantly reduce the national cancer burden and secure a healthier future for the next generation.
